How we rank a pub.

AUS PUBS applies PINTR’s local-value-v1 scoring code to the full AUS PUBS catalogue. The AUS PUBS score is a catalogue comparison, separate from the Google star rating, rather than a critic’s review or a guarantee of today’s menu.

What goes into the score?

PINTR score = 50 × adjusted Google rating ÷ 5
+ 25 × beer value ratio ÷ (1 + beer value ratio)
+ 25 × food value ratio ÷ (1 + food value ratio)

Google contributes up to 50 points; regular beer and regular food contribute up to 25 points each. Paid promotion does not influence this score.

How do local prices compare?

Beer comparisons match the product and serving size. Food comparisons match meal categories. Each item needs at least five other venues, starting in the suburb and widening to the city, state or Australia. Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide use a 60 km city radius; Gold Coast and Darwin use 50 km; Hobart and Canberra use 40 km. Each card names the comparison area, peer count and median.

The value ratio is the peer median divided by the pub’s regular price. Duplicate regular prices use the highest price, and the venue itself is excluded from its benchmark. Scoring ratios are bounded between 0.5 and 2, then combined with a geometric mean so one item cannot dominate. The displayed evidence retains the original reported prices.

Why does the review count matter?

Adjusted Google rating = (Google stars × review count + catalogue mean × 100) ÷ (review count + 100)

Ratings with few reviews are pulled toward the catalogue mean of 4.30 stars. As reviews accumulate, the adjusted rating approaches the venue’s Google rating.

Which pubs can be ranked?

1152 of AUS PUBS’ 7726 catalogue venues meet the criteria: a Google rating and positive review count, a comparable regular beer and a comparable regular main meal, plus a pub, bar or brewery signal. Chips alone do not qualify. Timed offers and member-only deals do not improve the score. Missing data is not treated as a zero score. The wider AUS PUBS directory remains available in full.

Multiple feature selections require every selected feature. “Any feature” removes that restriction. Feature matching uses the same AND calculation as PINTR. Location menus include the full AUS PUBS catalogue across all states and territories. Areas without comparable ranking evidence show alphabetical directory listings with no score; only recorded features are used for filtering.

How current is it?

The ranking was calculated on 2026-10-21. Prices and ratings can be older or undated; check the current venue listing before visiting.
